Bike the Barns 2016

The Route:

This year's route traverses through Dane County, southwest of Madison. Both routes start and end at Badger Prairie Park in Verona, which is about 10 miles from downtown Madison.

The Radish (32 miles) and Rutabaga (53 miles) routes both visit Yee Circle Farm and Los Jalapeños Farm at The Farley Center in Verona, as well as Crossroads Community Farm in Cross Plains. The Rutabaga route has two additional stops at Snug Haven Farm in Belleville and Prairie Bluff Farm in Springdale. From lunch (Crossroads Community Farm) onward, all riders travel the same roads.

Both routes travel along the Military Ridge Trail. If you don't already have an annual WI Trail Pass, you will need to buy a day pass when registering ($4).

The Ride:

Is there a rain date?
No. Unfortunately, it takes an incredible amount of organizing for the farms, rider support, and other logistics to make this event happen and, due to the farm visits and freshly prepared food, it cannot be replicated on another day. If there are scattered showers, you are welcome to ride, but ride at your own risk. We will still have all the rider support and food available for the day. If there are thunderstorms and severe weather, we will delay the start times or make decisions based on rider safety. You may drive to the farms, and you can also opt for the shorter route the day of the event.

Can anyone attend the lunch?
No. Unfortunately, we are not able to host more participants for lunch. But we do sell additional After Party tickets!

Will vegetarian meals be offered?
Yes. You will be asked if you would like a vegetarian meal when you register. Unfortunately, we can't guarantee that we will be able to provide for all dietary needs (gluten-free, vegan, non-dairy, etc.). Please be sure to make accommodations for your own caloric needs!

Do I need to wear a helmet?
YES! Your safety is our #1 priority; wear your helmet. Riders will not be allowed to participate without a helmet.

Will there be rider support?
Rider support will be available throughout the ride, but riders are expected to be prepared to service their own bikes. Please bring extra tubes. On-bike support riders are embedded in the ride and the routes are patrolled by SAG vehicles with HAM radio operators and professional bike mechanics.

Is parking available?
Yes, free parking is available at Badger Prairie County Park. Volunteers will be on hand to direct you.

When will I know the full menu?
Because of the changing nature of available produce, a full menu will not be available until a week or so before the event. You will learn more about the food in the rider emails in September. Since this is a long ride, we strongly encourage you to bring extra calories (energy bars, etc.) to eat in between stops.

Will water be available during the ride?
Yes, there will be water available at each farm stop, and all the SAG vehicles carry water coolers. HOWEVER, please bring at least 2 bottles to fill up and hydrate between stops.

We're from out of town, do you have any accommodation recommendations?
We have blocked rooms at several hotels in the Madison and Verona area. In addition, we have recommended several B&B's. To get a more local view, Airbnb typically has a number of great options for the Madison-area. See the Accommodations page on the FairShare website for more information.

Registration and Pledging:

How will I know I am registered?
You will receive a confirmation e-mail when your payment has cleared, stating that you have purchased the registration for Bike the Barns.

Do I have to raise pledges?
No. Riders can choose to pay the full-price registration of $125, up front.

When will I register/check-in?
You will register online before the event, but you will check-in at Badger Prairie Park on the morning of the ride or at early check-in opportunities in September in Madison. Look for more information in the rider emails. Please add bikethebarns@csacoalition.org to your email address book.

Can I register by mail?
No, we are accepting online registrations only, but you may pay by check, credit, or debit card.

What if I need to cancel my registration before the ride?
You can cancel your registration and expect a full refund if you cancel by Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016. Between Friday, Aug. 19 and Sunday, Sept. 4, we can refund your registration by 50 percent or you can donate your registration cost to the Partner Shares Program. There are no refunds available from September 5 onward for any reason, including funerals, accidents, medical emergencies, etc. If you cannot make the ride, we can send you a tax-deductible donation receipt for the cost of your registration. You can also transfer your registration to a friend or family member through Wednesday, Sept. 14. Please email bikethebarns@csacoalition.org if you need to cancel your registration.

Can my family and friends pledge by mail?
Yes, friends and family can send checks with your name in the memo line to FairShare CSA Coalition at 303 S. Paterson St. #1B, Madison, WI 53703. Pledges received by Friday, Sept. 9 will be counted toward your fundraising awards. Here is a downloadable Rider Sponsorship Form [PDF]

When will I be able to pick up my fundraising prize?
We strongly encourage you to plan to pick up your prize on the day of the event. The awards will be available for pick-up at the end of the ride. If you don't pick them up at the event, you will need to come by the FairShare office.
